CHICOPEE, MA | July 16, 2019 – Chicopee Electric Light (CEL) is beginning the construction of its pilot areas for the Crossroads Fiber network this month. The Crossroads Fiber network will deliver high-speed internet to residential and business customers. For residential customers, Crossroads Fiber is offering internet speeds of 250 Mbps and 1 Gig – that’s 1,000 Megabits per second. Both plans include free Wi-Fi. For businesses, Crossroads Fiber is offering several speeds and classes of service based on customer needs.
Currently four fiberhoods in the Memorial Drive area have been selected for a pilot project and construction. The areas were selected based on proximity to our fiber network and the different type of structures (single family homes, condos and businesses) to give CEL a wide variety of installation types. The company plans to start connecting customers by the end of summer and will contact customers in those areas, when service is available.
After the Pilot period is complete, CEL will begin building the Crossroads Fiber network in other areas primarily based on interest. The construction is taking a phased approach based on demand to avoid any impact on electric rates. The City of Chicopee has been broken down into approximately 140 fiberhoods. Crossroads Fiber is using a website to track interest and customers should log onto the website at www.crossroadsfiber.net to express their interest. When enough interest is reached in a fiberhood and it is economically viable to build, that area will move into the final design and construction phase. After completion, customers in the fiberhood will be contacted to fill out applications and sign up for service.
